Dr. Nejem Raheem, Secretary-Treasurer and Economics Fellow
Nejem graduated from Bennington College, and holds a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of New Mexico where he received a National Science Foundation Dissertation Improvement Award and a Title VI FLAS Award to study Portuguese and conduct research in Brazil. Nejem brings ten years of experience in the environmental field.
His expertise is in teaching and the economic analysis of natural resource and environmental issues, with a focus on common-pool, water, and marine resources in traditional or indigenous economies. In his work with CSE, he has researched and written several reports for clients addressing marine ecosystem conservation and novel approaches to conservation using economic approaches. Through his contribution, several proposed Federal projects with adverse effects on marine and terrestrial environments have been stopped. In addition to his work at CSE, he is senior economist at Global Conservation Assistance, and works as a consultant with Social Enterprise Associates.
Nejem also works as Senior Lecturer at Kinship Conservation Fellows, where he teaches economics to conservation professionals. Working with a diverse team of expert faculty and visiting lecturers, he trains 18 international mid-career conservation professionals every year in economic theory, environmental valuation, cost-benefit analysis, and payments for ecosystem services, in addition to working with them to improve the performance of their field projects. His published works include articles in peer-reviewed literature and newsletter contributions on the topic of economics and biodiversity in the Society for Conservation Biology.
